## Origins
Coffee was introduced to Vietnam by French colonists in the 19th century. The country quickly became one of the world's largest coffee exporters, known primarily for its robusta beans.
The global coffee trade can be visualized as:

## Traditional Brewing
Vietnamese coffee is traditionally brewed using a **phin** — a small metal drip filter placed over a cup. The physics of drip brewing follows a simple relationship:
$$ Q = \frac{\Delta P \cdot \pi r^4}{8 \eta L} $$
Where $Q$ is flow rate, $\Delta P$ is pressure difference, $r$ is filter radius, $\eta$ is viscosity, and $L$ is bed depth.
### Egg Coffee (Cà Phê Trứng)
Invented in Hanoi in 1946, egg coffee is made with egg yolks, condensed milk, and sugar, whipped into a creamy froth poured over strong black coffee.
## Coffee Culture
- **Cà Phê Sữa Đá** — Iced coffee with condensed milk, the most popular style
- **Cà Phê Đen Đá** — Iced black coffee, no milk
- **Bạc Xỉu** — Coffee with mostly milk (favorite in Saigon)

> "Coffee is not just a drink in Vietnam — it is a daily ritual, a social event, and a way of life."
Vietnam is now the second-largest coffee exporter in the world, after Brazil. The growth rate over recent years:
| Year | Export (tons) | Growth |
|------|--------------|--------|
| 2020 | 1,565,000 | — |
| 2021 | 1,785,000 | +14% |
| 2022 | 1,920,000 | +7.6% |
| 2023 | 2,100,000 | +9.4% |
